Dave Ahrens, P.E.
City Engineer
City of Lino Lakes
April 18, 1996
Page 5
SCHOOL SPEED ZONE
A school speed zone can be put in place by the agency that owns the roadway for which the
speed zone is being considered. In this case, the City would have the authority to provide
a reduced speed for the area of Elm Street that is adjacent to the school property.
However, it is recommended and more prudent to provide design features that would
minimize the need for the speed zone. Design features that provide for improved safety in
school zones include no parking on the street, proper signs and placement, turn lanes, and
proper sight distances. The recommendation would be to provide a design appropriate for
the existing speed limit. If safety concerns are present after the school has opened, a speed
zone may be implemented at that time.
Attachment
ce
H:\5666.00\CIVIL\CORRPS\041896.DA
