B. CHEMICAL DEPENDENCY UNIT ("CD" BUILDING) <br />1. BUILDING DESCRIPTION <br />General <br />The proposed Chemical Dependency Unit is a two-story building, with partial basement <br />and penthouse space for mechanical and electrical equipment. Resident bedrooms, <br />together with housing support services, are clustered around four dayrooms, each of which <br />open to a circulation system which is visible from the Central Security desk. Program <br />services are accommodated in the multi-purpose room and within each of the four <br />dayrooms. Staff office accommodations are dispersed within the housing units and the <br />Administrative area. <br />Housing <br />Two levels of single and double rooms provide minimum security in a normalized living <br />environment. Each bedroom has a door with glass vision panel; metal bed or bunk, <br />wardrobe and desk with chair; tempered glass mirror; towel rods; and an operable, <br />screened exit window. Finishes are painted fiber -reinforced gypsum wallboard on walls, <br />and vinyl tile floors. Three bedrooms in each of four housing unit meets ADA <br />requirements for handicap accessibility. <br />Each unit of bedrooms opens to a dayroom for activities such as dining, television viewing <br />and passive recreation, and for meetings of educational and support groups. The dayroom <br />has sturdy, movable dining and lounge furniture, television and a stand-up staff work <br />station. Finishes include carpet on floors with vinyl tile in heavy traffic areas. The <br />dayroom is designed for direct supervision by staff counselors. Off the dayrooms are <br />toilets/lavatories, showers and janitor closets. <br />Housing Support <br />Staff Offices: Staff counselors will have offices inside each housing unit directly adjacent <br />to the dayrooms. Included is a meeting/counseling room. <br />Kitchenette: Equipment will be provided for recreational use, including a <br />refrigerator/freezer, microwave oven, utility sink and storage shelving. Meal preparation <br />and dining facilities are not provided in the proposed Chemical Dependency Unit, but these <br />services are available at a central facility. <br />Laundry: A residential -sized, commercial -grade washer and dryer, utility sink and layout <br />table are provided for resident use. <br />Exercise Room: A central exercise room is provided to serve each of the four housing <br />units. <br />Page 53 <br />
