ECONOMIC
DEVELOPMENT
MEMORANDUM
TO: Mary Kay Wyland
FROM: Brian Wessel
DATE: October 29, 1993
SUBJECT Greenhaven Press
Executive Summary
Background: Greenhaven Press, Inc. is a publisher of textbooks, periodicals and
newspapers currently headquartered in San Diego with a Twin Cities subsidiary leasing
space in various locations. It currently has a distribution and warehouse center in
Shoreview. The company sells to schools, colleges, book stores, churches and
libraries both in the United States and Canada. It employs 40, with 20 of those
employees to be relocated to Lino Lakes.
Owners David Bender and Bruno Leone are originally from the Twin Cities. They
started the business in 1970, later moved their offices to San Diego, maintaining its
distribution center here. They plan to move the distribution center from St. Paul to
2 1/4 acres in the Uhde/Nelson portion of the Apollo Business Park. The first phase
of construction calls for a 16,400 square foot building, with plans to double the space
to 32,800 square feet within three years.
Mr. Bender and Mr. Leone are working with Belair Builders in New Brighton, and
Winsor/Faricy Architects and hope to begin construction immediately upon approval.
Recommendation:
This is an excellent candidate for the Apollo Business Center. EDAAB recommends
approval for the Greenhaven Press project.
1189 MAIN STREET, LINO LAKES, MINNESOTA 55014 (612) 464-5562
