There are several lakes, numerous seasonal cabins, ATV and snowmobile trails, and much wilderness. The average population of 300 residents increases during the summer and hunting season. Our western border is 6 miles off Highway 53. This is a busy four lane highway running from Duluth to Canada. Our department also provides coverage for 13 sections of unorganized township 55-15 on our eastern border. We are regularly called to mutual aid our neighboring townships of Cotton, Canyon, Central Lakes, Makinen, and McDavitt. Our department provides fire, rescue, and medical support for these areas. Our nearest full time fire department is 20 miles from our northwest border. We are a small volunteer department of 10 active members with a few support personnel. We are a dedicated group who can boast a 100% response rate to our calls. We average about 30 calls a year. This year, we have already responded to 22 calls. Because of the size of the area that we cover, we must maintain two fire halls. One is on our eastern end, and one is 15 miles away toward our western end. Each of these halls houses an engine, tanker, and rescue vehicle. The 1980 model year engine that we need to replace is no longer a reliable vehicle. The Ellsburg VFD is allocated an annual operating budget of $38,000.00 from our township. We would like to purchase the 1995 Ford engine that you are selling, but obviously we have a very limited budget. Please consider our offer of $33,500.00.
