5/29/2019 23 Staff reviews building development plans to ensure preservation of trees in tree protection areas. Site inspection are completed prior and during construction to ensure conformance with tree preservation plans. Assistance is provided to homeowners and builders to protect existing trees or coordinate tree mitigation. Ensure that new development meets code for saving trees and take advantage of the opportunity to remove tree threats like EAB, structurally unsound trees, or undesirable trees. Periodically inspect construction site for intact tree preservation fence. BOULEVARD TREE PLANTINGS/TREE SALES (F2) Staff plans, bids, and contracts annual plantings of boulevard trees for new properties and replacement of existing trees. TASKS F2.1 Boulevard Tree Planting Late winter or early spring, inventory new developments for anticipated boulevard plant readiness. Develop a list of species and numbers and send out for bids. Almost always this list changes as planting time gets closer. For example, a house was finished building sooner than was anticipated or a storm caused a remove and replace situation. If you wait too long and you won’t get the trees you want. Recommend getting 3 bids-Midwest, Margolis, and an additional company. Have to estimate if house will be done in time sometimes. Contractor calls in locates and the city stakes location. Send a letter out to residents explaining process. Trees must be in line going down street. Stakes can move laterally back and forth on lot as long as utilities are clear. No planting 30 feet from a corner. Mix species, no more than 15% of any species in planting areas. May be ok to mix species on each street. Environmental Coordinator to supervise the planting of trees. Trees are recorded in Cartegraph. Inspect new trees for 1 year warranty next spring or before 1 year warranty expires. Have dead trees replaced. Water new trees when droughty with City tanker. Started using Gators on new trees. F2.2 Tree Sale Coordinate an annual tree sale through the City and Anoka Conservation District. Write an article for tree orders in Winter Newsletter. Order trees based on signups and hand out during annual recycling day. Get volunteers to help with tree disbursement.
