5/29/2019 22

FORESTRY

Staff coordinates and supervises annual tree plantings on public properties, parks and boulevards,
reforestation contract plantings, and special projects to promote safe and sustainable forest
management within the city. Authority and responsibilities are established under City Code §
1008.

BLVD TREE MAINTENANCE/HAZARDOUS REMOVAL (F1)

Staff supervises and participates in tree initiatives including trimming, removals, chemical
treatment for insects, disease and nutrient problems. Staff coordinates trimming of
approximately 500 boulevard trees annually.

TASKS
F1.1 Tree Maintenance
Coordinate with Public Works or contractor crews on pruning, tree maintenance, and
removals.
• Enter maintenance into Cartegraph
• GPS new trees into .Shp files then have them changed to Cartegraph files
• Update Cartegraph when something changes with tree
• Update data dictionary in Trimble periodically (new species added for
example)
F1.2 Pruning
City crews prune in winter months between snow events.
F1.3 Tree Maintenance
Many calls will be received concerning the health and vigor of not only public trees
but private trees as well. Environmental Coordinator should be on top of current
issues and able to respond to them.
F1.4 Tree Removals
Hazardous trees located on public property should be identified for removal.
Depending on the situation, removals can be done by City. Sometimes if there is a
more technical tree then bid the removal out. EAB blocks of trees on streets can be
bid out. There is money appropriated for this in the annual budget.
F1.5 Storm Damage
Storms sometimes damage trees. Decisions on whether to fix or remove and replace
damaged trees must be made. If Oak trees are damaged in April, May, or June,
seriously consider implementing control measures for Oak Wilt; or radically prune
damaged areas out of trees and paint wounds immediately. Communicate
information to residents after a storm. Might have to door knock. There is money
also appropriated for storm damage replacement. The priorities must be weighed if
there is an oak wilt situation that must be controlled on city property.
F1.6 Registration
Register with the Tree Care Registry in January each year - mail fee and application.
This is a mandatory fee because we perform in-house tree work.
F1.7 Tree Preservation
