2020 BUDGET ‐ VEHICLE/EQUIPMENT
REPLACEMENT FOR VEHICLE #502
GMC SIERRA 2500 CREW CAB
$55,000 ‐ UTILITIES FUND

Vehicle #502 is a 2011 Ford F‐150 with 91,000 miles that is used by our UƟliƟes Department. Unfortunately,
it doesn’t meet a lot of the needs of our uƟliƟes employees. The 2011 Ford F‐150’s were the first model to
have an electric power steering system. Unfortunately, the City was informed upon arrival that this model of
F‐150 was not rated for or capable of having a plow installed (due to the new electric power steering system).
We were told that we would void our warranty if a plow was installed. This leaves the truck lacking useful‐
ness during the winter months.
Also, Vehicle #502 has a maximum towing capacity of 7,800 pounds. The UƟliƟes Department regularly hauls
around a variety of trailers that exceed that capacity including a towable generator (9,200 lbs.), Vac Trailer
(12,480 lbs.), Dump Trailer (14,000 lbs.), and skid‐steer trailers (9,980 lbs.).
Staff recommends replacing this truck with a vehicle that beƩer aligns with the tasks that the UƟliƟes Depart‐
ment needs to accomplish. We have come to the conclusion that a GMC Sierra 2500 Crew Cab would be an
ideal choice for a replacement. It would be more than capable of plowing snow and could be used year‐
round. It has a maximum towing capacity of 14,500 lbs., which is enough to safely tow any of our trailers. The
truck itself would have a GVWR of 10,850 lbs., which would enable the driver to haul any of our trailers with‐
out needing to have a “Class A” CDL. The truck would be a “crew cab” with more interior space than the cur‐
rent truck. This would enable the employee to keep more of their tools and replacement parts on hand and
spend less Ɵme driving back to the shop for parts and/or tools.
Vehicle #502 is in relaƟvely decent cosmeƟc and mechanical condiƟon, which should help us get top dollar for
it on resale.

109
