Page 2
Park Board, June 4, 1979
Mr. Darrell Shaw, president of the Lino Lakes Jaycees, a newly formed chapter, was
present. They are looking for a project to get involved in and wanted to speak
to the Park Board about possibilities. The Park Board suggested a piece of park
land acquired last year, located southwest of Reshanau Lake. There has been no
work done on this yet, although it has a lake front suitable for a swimming beach
and higher ground suitable for a picnic area. The Park Board suggested the
Jaycees take a look at it and get in touch with Don Volk. If they liked the
site, a park plan could be worked on with the Park Board. Darrell Shaw can be
contacted at 786-7895, and will be in touch with Don Volk after their decision
on this.
Don Volk had several items to present:
--A 4-H group (leader, Lynn Schwankl ) had contacted him about planting seedlings
for the parks--Norway Pine, Black Walnut, and Green Ash. He had given the okay
on this, and had asked especially for the Green Ash. He thought they would use
them as border trees rather than interior trees , putting them in Lino Park, and
the remainder at Sunrise Park. The seedlings are from University Extension.
--In reference to the routed wood sign, the Park Board hadn' t specified what was
to go on this other than the words "City Hall Park" in large letters. Park hours
under this were suggested, although there were no hours set for the parks as yet.
Don Volk had checked with the Vo Tech, but they do not make signs, so he had to
go to private sign makers. He had found someone from North Branch who could
make the sign for around $150. "City Hall Park" would be double-faced, routed
in two inch cedar boards. Mr. Shaughnessy moved that the Park Board recommend
ordering the sign, as outlined by Mr. Volk. Mr. Scherer seconded the motion.
All were in favor. Motion declared passed.
--The third item brought up by Mr. Volk was a proposal to start a spraying program
for the parks. They have never been sprayed in the past and the dandelion prob-
lem is particularly bad. He suggested the Park Board buy a chemical sprayer, and
passed around some material on the model he thought would be most suitable for
this. This was a "Queen of Diamonds" model (Gem Line, Menning Manufacturing Co. ) ,
and runs about $1,000. The parks do not have a peice of equipment with a power
take off on it, otherwise a cheaper model could be purchased. He has checked
into renting a lawn and turf sprayer, and several other possibilities, but they
are not available. The city does not have to be licensed for spraying. MCPP plus
2,4,-D would be used. These chemicals could be gotten at a 20 percent discount.
If this is purchased, they could spray now and again in the fall . Next year's
program could be started earlier, and fertilizer could be used as well . The total
expenditure this year--sprayer and chemicals--would probably run $1,250. Mr.
Scherer moved to recommend to the council that this equipment be purchased. Mr.
Shaughnessy seconded the motion. All were in favor. Motion declared passed.
The Park Board further discussed and reviewed the Reshanau park site with Steven
Wells, also from the Lino Lakes Jaycees.
Ina Liljedahl recommended that Park Board members review the material in regard
to the application for a grant (for the all-season building) before Monday's
n
meeting.
Mr. Shaughnessy moved to adjourn at 9:20 p.m. Mr. Cheesebrough seconded the motion.
All were in favor. Motion declared passed.
