Page 2
Park Board, May 7, 1979
building, it might need fire proof walls, in which case, cinder blocks all the
way up would probably be the least expensive alternative.
--Mrs. Liljedahl inquired into the feasibility of having an opening off the
kitchenette for summertime concessions. Since the upper level is too far
off the ground, the possibilities of putting the kitchenette on the lower level
were considered. In this case, however, it would no longer be near the meeting
room, and Mr. Zelinka pointed out that it would possibly be subject to more
minor vandalism if on the more frequently used and accessible lower floor. It
was felt that the possibilities of having the kitchenette on an accessible wall
should be considered in future plans.
--The question of whether the storage room was adequate was brought up by Mr.
Scherer. It is designed to contain sports equipment and the snowblower for the
rink. Mr. Scherer suggested it be enlarged, with a view to future expansion
needs. Mr. Zelinka questioned the necessity of a larger area, pointing out that
it would merely accumulate miscellaneous items from the city or other agencies
that would be difficult to get rid of if the area was ever needed, and the Park
Board would be no better off in the long run. Mrs. Liljedahl inquired as to the
possibility of an attic storage space; Mr. Volk indicated that it would not be
large enough.
--Mr. Scherer was interested in the possibilities for future expansion, if neces-
sary. Mr. Volk felt this would be possible, especially along the west wall ,
although there were other options as well .
--Mr. Zelinka suggested that any doors should be on an observed wall for a youth
structure.
--Mr. Shaughnessy brought up the advantages of having an overhang on the top
story. Mr. Zelinka felt that it would afford some sort of shelter in inclement
weather when the building is closed.
--Mr. Scherer moved that the Park Board have Mr. Volk contact the city engineer
to discuss the plans and suggestions with him in time to have a preliminary
presentation to the Council at their next meeting, May 14. It was felt that
the water supply problem should be discussed as well . Mr. Shaughnessy seconded
the motion. Motion declared passed. The Park Board felt this expense would
fall within the "reasonable amounts" guideline set by the Council .
The Park Board requested that they receive monthly financial statements on current
Park Board funds, as they had in the past.
Mr. Zelinka reported to the Board regarding the development just off Pine; the
Council had accepted cash in lieu of land in this case, because the area in
question had been designated a ponding area by the developer. The Council had
felt cash preferable to a less-than-value equivalent.
The Park Board requested that because of the amount of travel they do that they
be paid mileage expenses.
Mrs. Liljedahl suggested that in the future the Park Board consider having
available drawings of each of their parks.
