A(21 1 17ff
The regular meeting of the Lino Lakes Parks, Recreation and Environmental Commission was
called to order at 8: 10 P.M. , Monday, September 18, 1978 by Vice Chairman Liljedahl . Mem-
bers present: Liljedahl , Johnson, Crouse, Foster. Members absent: Shaughnessy, Scherer,
Zesch. Councilman Zelinka and Mr. Volk were also present.
Mr. Roy Stanley, developer of Sunset Oaks presented his plan for one tot lot in Sunset
Oaks. The lot Ls to be located on lot I , block 7 of Sunset Oaks and will be bounded by
Sunset Avenue, Bradley Street and Leonard Street and will be approximately 2. 12 acres in
size. He explained the lot will be excavated, screened and fenced and he would like to
start working on the park as soon as possible. Leonard and Bradley Streets will be com-
pleted within the next week or two and he would like the park completed this fall as well .
Mrs. Liljedahl explained the Board had thought a rustic look would be good for this area
and suggested that he look at a park located south of Highway #10 on Silver Lake Road for
ideas. As far as equipment was concerned, Mr. Stani:ey felt the use of tires as equipment
would detract from the appearance of the park. He also wondered if there could be a pro-
blem with maintenance with cedar equipment.
Mrs. Liljedahl and Mr. Volk will meet with Mr. Stanley on Friday September 22, 1978 at
10:00 A. M. and tour several parks for equipment ideas. Mrq. Shackle, from Centennial Hockey
Association suggested the Game Time Catalog could give some good ideas.
Mr. Stanley explained to the Board that the Council wanted the parks on the interior lots
away from Sunset Avenue, however, he really wanted to get this tot lot finished before fall
and the lot was most centrally located in the area currently being developed.
Mr. Zelinka reminded Mr. Stanley to keep an accurate record of the cost of this park because
,,-IN it constitutes part of the park dedication for Sunset Oaks.
the board thanked Mr. Stanley for coming this evening.
Mr. Crouse moved to approve the minutes of the August 21 , 1978 Park Board meeting. Mr.
Johnson seconded the motion. Motion declared passed.
Mr. Uonald Shackle from the Centennial Hockey Assn. appeared before the Board to tell the
Board that the Association is setting up their hockey program for the 1978/1979 season.
The Association would like to know the plans for the hockey rinks at Sunrise Park.
Mrs. Liljedahl explained that for now the plan is to continue with the south hockey rink
and use the north rink for pleasure skating at Sunrise Park. She asked for substantiation
of the need for a second hockey rink.
Mr. Shackle explained that he is currently in contact with Fridley, Spring Lake Park and
Blaine setting up a house league of 45 teams. This will require more rinks. He has access
to hockey lights that the Lino Lakes Lions now have.
Mr. Zelinka asked what would be the approximate cost of upgrading the second rink. Mr.
Volk guessed approximately $2,000 to $3,000.
x
Mr. ShaOle explained that Circle Pines is also after the Lions hockey lights. Mr. Volk
said it would still cost over $2,000 to upgrade the rink.
Mr. Foster asked if the rink were upgraded for hockey would this eliminate pleasure skating
,,On this rink. It was explained that figure skates could do a lot of damage to a hockey
ink. Mr. Volk explained there is not much conflict with time since most pleasure skaters
are home by dark.
Mr. Zelinka asked how much would the second rink be used and who would be using it. The
answer to these questions would need to be known before further expense could be justified.
