1996 City of Lino Lakes Residential Survey 7
Public Safety Problems:
Fifteen percent of the sample reported there were areas in Lino Lakes where they would be afraid
to walk alone at night. Of this subsample,sixty-three percent reported they were afraid to walk
anywhere in the community alone at night. Twelve percent cited the trailer park, while nine
percent each pointed to the area around the prison and city parks. Ninety-two percent felt safe
and secure at night in their homes. And, eighteen percent had invested in a means of self-
protection during the past two years; about one-half had purchased a security system, while about
one-fifth had bought a weapon.
Lino Lakes residents were asked to choose their two greatest public safety concerns from a list of
six problems. Sixty-seven percent pointed to"residential crimes, such as burglary, theft, and
vandalism." Twenty-seven percent picked"traffic congestion,"while somewhat behind, in third
place, "drugs"was chosen by twenty-two percent. An average eleven percent observed that none
of these concerns were serious in Lino Lakes.
In commenting on the change in property crimes and crimes against people during the past five
years, differing perceptions were noted. Fifty-seven percent felt crimes against property had
"increased,"while thirty-three percent thought they had"remained about the same." But, fifty-
three percent felt crimes against people in the community had"remained about the same,"while
twenty-eight percent saw an"increase."
A very solid eighty-two percent rated the amount of patrolling the police department did in their
neighborhood as"about right." Fifteen percent felt it was"not enough,"and one percent
regarded it as"too much."
Sixty percent were aware of a neighborhood crime watch program in their neighborhood.
Among those aware of neighborhood programs,sixty-one percent actually participated in the
program. Among those unaware of crime watch programs in their neighborhood, sixty-eight
percent indicated they would participate in organizing a neighborhood crime watch program in
their area.
Development Preferences:
Thirty-one percent would most prefer the City of Lino Lakes to attract more commercial
development. Retail development followed, at twenty-two percent, while thirteen percent would
favor industrial development. Eight percent would like to see more retail development, while
four percent specifically wanted restaurants.
9rDRL
