1996 City of Lino Lakes Residential Survey g
Town Center Establishments:
In reacting to a list of sixteen establishments which could be attracted to a Town Center, only
two were rejected by a majority of respondents. Over eighty percent supported attracting a
quality restaurant and a family-style restaurant. Between seventy percent and seventy-nine
percent favored attracting a grocery store, an indoor recreation center, walking trails, and retail
stores. Between sixty percent and sixty-nine percent favored a medical and dental clinic and
senior housing. Majorities between fifty percent and fifty-nine percent supported day care
facilities, a public plaza for socializing, professional services, and middle income housing. A
forty-nine percent to forty-five percent judgment favored a fast-food restaurant. At the bottom of
the preference list, fifty-three percent opposed townhouses, while sixty-two percent opposed low-
income housing.
Lino Lakes Community Center:
Residents were asked to consider the types of facilities they would like to see included in a Lino
Lakes Community Center,if such a facility were constructed. In assessing eleven potential
facilities, all were supported by a majority of respondents. Over eighty percent favored the
inclusion of a senior citizens' center and a teen center. Between seventy percent and seventy-
nine percent supported an indoor family fun leisure-type swimming pool, a gymnasium, an
exercise and fitness center, and a walking/running track. Between sixty percent and sixty-nine
percent supported the inclusion of smaller meeting rooms, a trail head area for walking and cross
country skiing, and a day care center. Fifty-eight percent favored the inclusion of racquetball
courts, while a narrow forty-seven percent to forty-two percent judgment supported including
large banquet rooms.
In concept, seventy-eight percent favored the construction of a Community Center in the City of
Lino Lakes. Only eighteen percent opposed its construction. When the topic of a property tax
increase to fund construction of a facility, support dropped to sixty percent, while opposition rose
to thirty-two percent. Similarly, the topic of lower property tax increases through private
ownership of certain facilities --with potentially higher user fees --was discussed:by a seventy-
three percent to twenty-two percent margin, residents supported this approach.
Characteristics of the Community:
Residents were read a list of fifteen characteristics of a community. They were then asked to
indicate if they thought Lino Lakes had"too many or too much," "too few or too little,"or"about
the right amount." Majorities or pluralities felt that Lino Lakes had"about the right amount"of
eight characteristics: the number of people residing in the community, rental units, high cost
housing opportunities, condominiums and townhouses, income diversity, parks and open spaces,
1011-4
2'DRL
