•
•
•
WS — Item 2
WORK SESSION STAFF REPORT
Work Session Item
Date: November 7, 2011
To: City Council
From: Paul Bengtson
Re: Superl /Lakes Building Components Inc — Outdoor Storage application
Background
At the October 24th regular City Council meeting the Zoning Text Amendment request,
made by Superl /Lakes Building Components, to allow accessory outdoor storage on an
interim basis in the Light Industrial district was forwarded to the November 7th work
session for further discussion.
The staff report from the October 24th meeting is attached to this work session report for
all of the background information and staff review.
The City Council briefly discussed the possibility of adding a sunset clause to the
ordinance amendment (if adopted) that would allow this user the opportunity to apply for
the interim use pelrnit, but would then remove the use thereafter. Staff discussed this
option with the City Attorney and both the staff and attorney agree that this would be a
perilous path to tread.
Another option to consider is that if the ordinance was amended, further research on the
issue of outdoor storage could be completed as part of the Zoning Ordinance update
necessitated by the adoption of the 2030 Comprehensive Plan. That research could then
be considered while determining if the use should remain in the ordinance for future
users, and in what form.
Direction
1. Should the Zoning Ordinance Amendment be placed on an upcoming agenda for
action.
2. Should staff proceed with research to determine how outdoor storage should be
defined and allowed within the Light and General Industrial zoning districts.
Attachments
October 24th Staff Report
