Black crappie were the next most abundant fish present, with most fish of small
size. Bluegill were less abundant with nearly half of fish over 7 inches long. Northern
pike numbers were good, with most fish three years old. Walleye numbers were high for
this lake class with some fish over 20 inches. Other species present in the lake include bowfin, golden shiner,
largemouth bass (2 fish), muskellunge (1 fish), white sucker, yellow bullhead, and yellow
perch. Several minnow species were sampled in seine hauls.
A heron rookery has been present on the island in the lake since 1982. At its largest
it included 1137 nests of three species - Great Blue Heron, Great Egret and
Black- crowned Night Heron. The heronry was abandoned midway through the nesting
season in 2000 and again in 2001. Cause of abandonment may be related to human
disturbance. This is the second largest rookery in the 7 county metro area. It is a very
significant regional natural resource.
