•
•
•
AGENDA ITEM 1B
STAFF ORIGINATOR: Linda Waite Smith, City Administrator
MEETING DATE: October 22, 2001
TOPIC: Consider Reclassification of Record Clerk Position
VOTE REQUIRED: 3/5
BACKGROUND:
On October 8, the City Council approved changes job descriptions, titles and pay
rates for several clerical positions so that comparable duties are compensated at
the same rate. The position of Police Records Clerk was not included in the
original analysis of other clerical positions. That position, which has two
incumbents, has now been analyzed and found to have essentially the same
duties as the positions which are now all classified as secretary.
We are recommending that the City Council approve reclassifying these
positions, making them equivalent to the position of Secretary and at the same
salary level.
The city has a precedent for consolidating job titles and pay ranges.
Maintenance Workers are paid at the same level whether they work for the
Parks, Streets or Utilities divisions of Public Services.
For 2001, the difference in the top step of the Secretary pay range is $440 higher
than the top step for Police Records Clerk. The changes would become
effective upon City Council approval.
OPTIONS:
1. Approve recommendations to reclassify Police Records Clerk position,
establish salary level and change title.
2. Decline to approve recommendations.
3. Return to staff for further review and /or action.
RECOMMENDATION:
Approve recommendations to reclassify Police Records Clerk position,
establish salary level and change title.
J: \Ismith\AFSCME \changes2.doc
