algae blooms were everywhere. A report from the aquatic biologist at the Rice Creek Watershed District issued
a letter stating "High speed boating in this area may cause sediment resuspension, nutrient release from the
and severe damage to the existing aquatic macrophyte community. All of the above mentioned items
S ediments,
ould be detrimental to the overall water quality and biological health of Peltier Lake." Slalom Water -ski Course in
Coontail Vegetation, July 14, 2001
•uring the summer of 2002, I went north of the island and found most Coontail there was floating in large mats
that were blown this way and that (Fig 6). Normally, this coontail is all just under the surface (Fig 2). With
certain north winds, huge floating mats of coontail were getting blown into the south part of the lake. THIS
HAS NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE! I believe it was a result of the destruction done by the slalom -ski course
the previous 2 years. Fig 7 shows a slug of coontail from north of the island blown into the south part of the
lake.
Fig. 6. Floating Coontail Stuck at Bog Poles
Fig 7.
