Fig. 8. Coontail Becomes Scum, August 6, 2002. Fig 9. Coontail Rotting, August 6, 2002
Fig 8 shows what happened to Fig 7. The coontail blown from north of the island was blown into the south part
of the lake and to the south shore. It turned into "pea soup." Fig 9 shows a huge area of coontail rotting by
Waterworks at the south end of the lake. The smell was not pleasant.
Compare the scum of Fig 8 and Fig 9 with healthy coontail in Fig 2 — all taken in August of 2002. Fig 2 shows
secure coontail on August 20, 2002 west of the island where there was very little boat traffic.
Fig 10. Sediment Black Cloud —1 Meter Deep.
Fig 10 shows a black cloud of sediment following the raising of a secchi disk off the bottom just north of the
island. The water depth is 1 meter or about 3 feet. The disk was not jerked up, it was pulled up slowly from the
bottom.
It is absolutely clear to me that high speed boat traffic in the shallow sediments west, north, and east of the
island causes terrible water quality.
•
5
