County staff recommended that the city put together a proposal to demonstrate the
advantages of this option versus the impact of eventual tax forfeiture. Since half of the
property is within a TIF District, the county and school district won't be receiving taxes
on that portion for a number of years. There are also advantages to the city and county if
the city owns, markets and sells the property for eventual recovery of assessments and
additional tax base, rather than having it sit idle for a longer period. Staff would begin
this process by presenting the proposal initially to the County Board's Real Estate
Committee. Staff also met with County Commissioner Rhonda Sivarajah to apprise her of
the city's situation.
Requested Council Direction
Staff is seeking city council direction regarding moving forward with a proposal to
Anoka County to pursue the "deed in lieu" of forfeiture.
Attachment(s)
None
2
