FORESTRY <br />• Staff coordinates and supervises annual tree plantings on public properties, parks and boulevards, <br />reforestation contract plantings, and special projects such as FireWise to promote safe and <br />sustainable forest management within the city. <br />• <br />• <br />Areas of forestry include: <br />Tree Preservation: Staff reviews building development plans to ensure preservation of trees in <br />tree protection areas. Assistance is provided to homeowners and builders to protect existing <br />trees or coordinate tree mitigation. <br />Tree Trimming and Hazardous Tree Removal: Staff supervises and participates in tree initiatives <br />including trimming, removals, chemical treatment for insects, disease and nutrient problems. <br />Staff coordinated trimming of approximately 500 boulevard trees in 2009. <br />Boulevard Tree Plantings: Staff plans, bids and contracts annual plantings of boulevard trees for <br />new properties and replacement of existing trees. <br />Tree Disease Control: <br />Oak Wilt Program: Staff works with residents on education of identifying incidents and <br />controlling oakwilt infections that occur in the city. Staff coordinates disease control efforts. <br />Emerald Ash Borer: Staff is currently working with the Environmental Board on preparing a <br />Preparedness Plan for the Emerald Ash Borer problem. Future initiatives include identifying <br />infestations and working with the public on control. <br />SITE MAINTENANCE AND INSPECTION <br />Staff coordinates with maintenance crews in the restoration of public wetlands, ponds and <br />wetland bank areas, involving a number of activities including site preparation, seeding chemical <br />controls, burning, mowing, and erosion control. Staff inspects sites for compliance, public <br />stormwater infrastructure and proposes maintenance recommendations, wetland and drainage <br />easement encroachments, monitors vegetation reestablishment and inspects for completeness. <br />GIS <br />Staff maintains the Geographic Information System data base and mapping for forestry including <br />rare plant and animal populations, restoration areas, diseased trees, and well head protection. <br />SOLID WASTE <br />Staff administers and oversees Solid Waste Removal and Licensing in the city. Staff reviews <br />applications for waste haulers, collects fees, and issues licenses according to city ordinance. <br />Staff administers the recyling program in the city, and implements reporting requirements for <br />receipt of SCORE funding. <br />13 <br />
