• ENVIRONMENT /FORESTRY /SOLID WASTE <br />Overview. Environmental/Forestry/Solid Waste staff performs numerous functions to ensure that <br />the city's natural resources are preserved and enhanced as this community matures. Functions <br />vary from preventing storm water pollution and conserving the city's water supply, to recycling <br />and insect and disease control, all with the goal of promoting environmental sustainability. <br />Essential Functions include: <br />ENVIRONMENTAL BOARD LIASON <br />Staff serves as liaison to Environmental Board, prepares reports and presents at meetings, and <br />assists with carrying out the goals of the Environmental Board. <br />PUBLIC EDUCATION AND ASSISTANCE <br />Staff coordinates environmental education and offers programs in schools and courses to the <br />general public. Staff provides information to the public via handouts and the city website. Staff <br />coordinates and participates in city events such as Earth Day, Recycling Day and Arbor Day. <br />This department also assists the public with a variety of issues including disease control, storm <br />water pond quality, water quality improvements, native plantings, rain gardens, and weed <br />control. <br />NPDES PROGRAM <br />•Staff is responsible for coordinating storm water pollution prevention programs in accordance <br />with the city's National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Phase II permit. <br />These activities include Public Education and Outreach, Public Participation and Involvement, <br />Illicit Discharge Detection and Elimination, Construction Site Storm Water Runoff Control, Post <br />Construction Storm Water Management, and Municipal Pollution Prevention/Good <br />Housekeeping. <br />• <br />SHORT RANGE PLANNING <br />Staff undertakes a number of projects initiated by advisory boards and/or city council to address <br />implementation of the comprehensive plan, changes in state law, or city policy changes. <br />CONSERVATION AREA MANAGEMENT <br />Inspects, manages and enforces over 170 acres of city owned conservation areas. Activities <br />include location and maintenance of boundary signage, mapping, vegetative management, and <br />encroachment enforcement. <br />CODE ENFORCEMENT <br />Staff assists in the administration and enforcement of the city's nuisance ordinance including <br />weeds and diseased trees. Activies include complaint response, site inspections, enforcement <br />notices, resinspection, ordering of work if not resolved and billing procedures. <br />12 <br />
