•
STAFF ORIGINATOR:
MEETING DATE:
TOPIC:
VOTE REQUIRED:
BACKGROUND:
AGENDA ITEM 3A
Jean Viger, Deputy Clerk
May 8, 2006
Resolution No. 06 -64, Adding a New Precinct,
Redrawing Precinct Boundaries and Designating
New Polling Places
Simple Majority (3/5 Vote)
Residential growth in the city has created a need for an additional precinct. Precincts are
not tied to population size. However, precincts sized much beyond 2000 registered
voters can become unwieldy for election administration purposes. At this time I would
like the City Council to consider the recommendation to add a 7th Precinct.
Attached to this staff report is a draft Precinct/Boundary Change & Precinct Code
Assignment sheet, a map showing our current precincts & polling places and a map
showing the proposed changes to add Precinct No. 7. Note that there is no change to
Precinct No. 1 or Precinct No. 2. The southern portion of Precinct No. 3 was moved into
Precinct No. 5. Precinct No. 4 boundaries were not changed, but the polling place was
relocated to 600 Town Center Parkway, Lino Lakes City Hall. Precinct No. 7 was
created from Precinct No's. 5 & 6. Rice Lake Elementary, previously the polling place
for Precinct No. 4, would become the polling place for our new Precinct No. 7.
Minnesota Election Law states the governing body of a municipality shall establish the
boundaries of the election precincts and designate a polling place for each precinct. This
shall be done no later than June 1St in the year of a state general election. The boundary
changes shall not take effect until notice has been posted in the municipal clerk's office
for at least 60 days. If Resolution No. 06 -64 is approved, a notice will be sent to each
registered voter, as required by law, notifying them their election precinct and/or polling
place has been changed:
OPTIONS:
1. Approve Resolution,No. 06 -64
2. Return to Staff with Direction
RECOMMENDATION:
1. Approve Resolution No. 06 -64
-42-
