Child Passenger Safety <br />The Lino Lakes Police Department reminded parents that motor <br />vehicle car crashes are the number one cause of death and injury for <br />children and young adults. <br />• 70% of deaths and 66% of injuries in motor vehicle <br />collisions could be eliminated with the use of car safety <br />seats. <br />• More than 90% of safety seats are used incorrectly. <br />• More than 90% of safety seat violators have car seats but do <br />not use them consistently. <br />• More than 80% of children under 4 who died as motor <br />vehicle occupants were killed in survivable crashes. <br />• More children die in motor vehicle crashes than from all childhood diseases combined. <br />• Each year approximately 110 passengers under the age of 11 are killed or severely injured <br />in motor vehicle crashes in Minnesota. <br />• Seventy percent of fatalities and severe injuries could be prevented with the proper use of a <br />child restraint, and fifty percent could be prevented with proper safety belt use. <br />In an effort to assist parents and children in making vehicle travel safer, the Lino Lakes Police <br />Department participated in training several officers as Child Safety Seat Technicians. The officers <br />completed training in the proper installation and use of child safety seats and restraint systems in <br />vehicles. Officers assisted area parents and answered frequently asked questions regarding child <br />passenger safety. Child Safety Seat Clinics were held at various times throughout the community. <br />National Night Out <br />Neighborhoods in Lino Lakes were invited to join forces on Tuesday, August 2, with thousands of <br />communities nationwide for the 22nd annual National Night Out program. <br />This crime and drug prevention event is designed to: <br />• increase crime and drug prevention <br />awareness <br />• Generate support and participation in <br />local anti -crime efforts. <br />• Strengthen neighborhood spirit and <br />police - community relations. <br />• Send a message to criminals letting <br />them know neighborhoods are <br />organized and fighting back. <br />Lino Lakes Police Department 2005 Annual Report 16 <br />
