• <br />• <br />WS — Item 2 <br />WORK SESSION STAFF REPORT <br />Work Session Item 2 <br />Date: Council Work Session, February 4, 2008 <br />To: City Council <br />From: Mary Divine <br />Re: EDAC Business Survey <br />Background <br />The Lino Lakes Economic Development Advisory Committee (EDAC) has among its <br />action plan programs a Local Business Retention and Expansion (BR &E) Program. The <br />purpose is to provide an atmosphere of support and recognition of local businesses' <br />contribution to Lino Lakes and to encourage growth within the city. <br />The BR &E program strategy includes: <br />1. Continue initiating regular contact with businesses in Lino Lakes to develop a <br />positive public /private relationship. <br />2. Encourage the use of public incentives to move incompatible existing businesses <br />located within the city to compatible sites within Lino Lakes <br />3. Continue updating the inventory of existing businesses for on -going <br />communications. <br />4. Work with the local media to publicize achievements and contributions of local <br />businesses within the community. <br />5. Work with the local Chambers of Commerce to provide additional support to <br />local businesses. <br />In 1994 the city surveyed local businesses, and the results of that survey were useful in <br />measuring the business climate and learning which companies may be considering <br />expansion or relocation in their future plans. EDAC concluded the timing was right to <br />return more emphasis on expansion and retention of existing business given the current <br />market conditions that have led to a slowdown in commercial development. <br />O The survey was designed by staff using a variety of local surveys and suggestions from <br />the Minnesota Extension Service Business Retention and Expansion Program.
