Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) - The Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE)
program was created in 1983 and is a program where police officers teach classes to students on
drugs, alcohol, tobacco, and making healthy decisions about life. The DARE program is an ex-
cellent opportunity to create a positive relationship between the community's children and the
Officers of the Lino Lakes Police Department.
Since 1997 the Lino Lakes Police Department has participated in the DARE program with local
elementary schools.
DARE Officer William Owens met with over 300 students from the Rice I ,ake Elementary
School, Lino Lakes Elementary School, and Blue Heron Elementary School on a weekly bask
for twelve weeks. Officer Owens and the students discussed was to avoid dangerous situations
involving drugs and alcohol and how to say "No!" should one be presented with drugs or alco-
hol. They also discussed strategies for making healthy decisions and picking good friends. At
the end of the DARE program there was a graduation program in all three schools where the
families of DARE students had the opportunity to hear exceptionally done DARE essays and
watch their student be presented with a DARE diploma and be congratulated by the school and
police department leaders.
