• <br />• <br />• <br />AGENDA ITEM 3A <br />STAFF ORIGINATOR: Dan Tesch, Director of Administration <br />MEETING DATE: 22 June 2009 <br />TOPIC: Family Medical Leave for Military Families <br />VOTE REQUIRED: 315 <br />BACKGROUND <br />Recent Federal legislation has expanded Family Medical Leave (FMLA) to include <br />military families. Eligible employees who are the spouse, child, parent or next of kin of <br />a covered service member are now eligible for 26 weeks of leave during a single 12 <br />month period to care for the covered service member with a serious injury or illness. <br />Additionally, the spouse, child or parent of a military service member may take up to <br />12 weeks of leave during a single 12 month period for qualifying exigencies that may <br />arise due to active service. <br />RECOMMENDATION <br />Adopt and add the following policies to the city's personnel policies. <br />ATTACHMENTS <br />Family Medical Leave for Military Families. <br />
