2008 -09 Highlights <br />*The middle school received the Minnesota Academic <br />Excellence Foundation School Spotlight Award from the <br />Minnesota Academic Excellence Foundation (MAEF) <br />*Class of 2009: <br />CHS: 505 graduates (62 Graduates with Distinction; 23 <br />Highest Honors, 66 Honors, 188 Honorable Mention); <br />56 seniors awarded $45,550 in local scholarships; 21 Cen- <br />tennial Area Learning Center graduates ; 4 Journey Program <br />and 9 Adult Transition graduates; 12 adults earned their <br />GED at Adult Continuing Education <br />*Nine 8`h graders earned High Honor Awards for 4.0 GPA <br />throughout grades 6 -8 <br />*National Merit Scholarship winners: 1 semifinalist, 1 final- <br />ist, 2 commended students <br />*24 AP Scholars, 4 AP Scholars with Honor; 1 AP Scholar <br />with Distinction <br />*83 in National Honor Society <br />*Fall musical recognized in Spotlight High School Musical <br />Theater Program <br />*Music awards: 2 Minnesota High School Honors Choir <br />members, 14 North East Region Minnesota Band Direc- <br />tor's Association Honor Band members, 3 Minnesota Band <br />Director's Association State Honor Band members, 2 perfect <br />scores and 4 Best at Site Region AA Instrumental Music Solo <br />Ensemble Band Contest awards; 8 Minnesota All -State Band <br />and Orchestra members, 2 Minnesota All -State Choir mem- <br />bers, 2 perfect scores and 2 Best at Site at Region 5AA Vocal <br />Solo /Ensemble Contest <br />*MSHSL Triple A award winner for Region 5AA <br />*Minnesota Technology Education Association Supermile- <br />age challenge -4th place <br />* FIRST Robotics Minnesota North Star Regionals -5th place <br />* Sports /activities <br />State tournament participants: 10 teams (swim /dive, girls <br />cross country, math, dance, wrestling, girls basketball, girls <br />lacrosse, boys lacrosse, baseball, adapted softball); 22 indi- <br />vidual participants <br />Northwest Suburban Conference all - sports championship <br />trophy, the Norwick Cup -2nd place <br />6 college signings <br />*Staff honors: <br />2 TIES Exceptional Teachers, 1 Minnesota Association of <br />Family and Consumer Science's New Achievers Award, <br />teacher explorer for Polar Husky Expedition in the GoNorth! <br />Program, 1 Federation of High School Association's 2008- <br />09 Outstanding Music Educator Award for State of Min- <br />nesota, 1 State Coach of the Year, 1 State Assistant Coach of <br />the Year, 2 Section Coaches of the Year, 2 Section Assistant <br />Coaches of the Year, 1 Minnesota Wild Excellence in Coach- <br />ing Award <br />Accomplishments for 2008 -09 <br />Among the many accomplishments for the 2008 -09 <br />school year, are the following items, in no particular order: <br />Achieved General Fund balance of $7 million, highest in <br />15 years. <br />► Hired Dr. Paul Stremick as new Superintendent of <br />Schools and Warren Buerkley as Rice Lake Elementary <br />principal. <br />/ Purchased SMARTBoards and trained elementary <br />teaching staff. <br />Completed TIES' Technology Study. <br />/ Received Centennial Middle School Minnesota Aca- <br />demic Excellence Foundation School Spotlight Award. <br />► Planned implementation of on -line application system. <br />/ Approved issuance of Other Post Employment Ben- <br />efits bonding. <br />Funded Centennial Early Reading Foundation staff <br />and strengthened reading program. <br />► Addressed multiple complex special education issues. <br />Improved student achievement levels, K -12. <br />Delivered Every 15 Minutes program. <br />' Developed vertical /horizontal alignment, common <br />assessments, and outcomes. <br />Opposed school district parent and the Minnesota <br />Department of Education at Minnesota Court of <br />Appeals. <br />► Planned conduct of 2009 operating levy referendum. <br />/ Planned textbook, curriculum review, and training <br />initiatives. <br />► Implemented capital improvement budget planning. <br />' Implemented technology hardware purchasing and <br />staffing plans. <br />► Downsized budget and staff. <br />► Strengthened early intervention programs. <br />/ Developed and instituted a high school mathematics <br />brush up course for students requiring additional assis- <br />tance to pass the State GRAD and /or MCA II exams. <br />Settled negotiations with bargaining groups. <br />/ Replaced the pool filtration system. <br />Expanded extended day kindergarten <br />program. <br />/ Elected school board members: <br />Christina Wilson, Karen Lodico, John <br />Burns, Cindy Norton. <br />
