•
•
•
Memorandum
To: City Council Members
Scott Baumgartner, City Attorney
From: Peter Kluegel
Building Official
Date: October 26, 2007
Re: Garage Shed Addition
In the spring of 2004 after reviewing a Certificate of Survey for 2215 Reiling Road, a
letter from my office was sent to Ken Muehlstedt, 2215 Reiling Road. The reason for
the letter was that a portion of Mr. Muehlstedt's detached garage was only 1.2 inches
from the side property line. It was discovered that an 8 x 30 = 240 sq. ft. shed addition
to the existing detached garage (26 x 30 = 780 sq. ft.) was constructed without any
permits. Mr. Muehlstedt applied for and then withdrew an application for a variance to
the required 5 foot setback. Mr. Muehlstedt then removed 5 feet from the shed addition
after obtaining a building permit to meet setback requirements.
In 2007, Mr. Lloyd Chalupsky, 2215 Reiling Road, questioned the structural integrity of
the shed roof support. I then had an on -site meeting with Mr. Muehlstedt to discuss
additional roof support. After submitting a structural fix for the roof support, a meeting
with Ken Muehlstedt, Dan Kelsey (State of Minnesota Building Codes Structural
Engineer) and myself was scheduled to review the proposed fix. After doing some
loading calculations, Mr. Kelsey's opinion was that the proposed fix was adequate. On
Wednesday, September 5, 2007, a final inspection was completed on the support
system.
