commercial recycling are space and a secondary issue is cost. Mike thought they could provide
economical solutions for businesses when they have enough volume to make it worth it for
everybody. Ace also thought the idea of `cans for athletes" as proposed by council member
Dave Roeser is a good one and are supportive of the effort.
Environmental Coordinator Marty Asleson, and Public Facilities Director Rick DeGardner
together with Randy Tripplet from Acre Solid Waste met with Council Member Dave Roeser
on Thursday, the 24th of May to further discuss recycling as a fundraiser for City recreation
initiatives. Mr. Tripplet offered Ace Solid Waste's help in setting up a can and possibly
"other" recyclable materials that could be used for fundraising. A discussion ensued about
proper sequencing the concerns of enabling commercial recycling and fundraising. That is, the
fundraising system could evolve out of a new business community recycling model suggested
by Council Member Roeser. Attachment 1
In addition to the efforts stated above, the Environmental Board addressed means to
communicate with the Lino Lakes businesses on recycling. A questionnaire that was used by
the Anoka County in the past was given to the Environmental Board by Amy Altman. Lino
Lakes Economic Development Coordinator Mary Devine modified the survey with the Lino
Lakes business community in mind. (Please see Attachment 2). Mary Derive has also supplied
Environmental Staff with a data base of information on the Lino Lakes businesses. There are
198 listed businesses on this list.
City staff has also been given some indication from the County that there might be some
assistance with an intern to help make personal contact with the businesses, and can cages. An
intern would be used to make contact, establish recycling relationships and business
champions, and ultimately help to set up the Dave Roeser recycling business model. With an
intern, the Environmental Board Goal of increased business recycling, and the Cities Athletic
Complex fundraising might be reached sooner than later.
RECOMMENDATION
Staff is asking for direction on next steps for the business recycling goal.
ATTACHMENTS
1.
