•
•
•
Tract./ 01. e,,s 1_
Commercial and Non - Profit Entities Involvement in Recycling
Objective: To develop methods that increase the collection of recycled materials in Lino Lakes through
the involvement of commercial and non - profit entities in a way that is not a burden on those entities.
Issue: Recycling of bottles and cans is currently limited to residential properties. Commercial properties
often recycle cardboard but do not have a program available to them for bottles and cans. Employee
lunchrooms and break areas can accumulate larger quantities of recycled goods than most households.
Employees who are already trained to recycle at home are often looking for ways to recycle at work.
There are no model programs that involve businesses recycling bottles and cans.
Target Areas: Businesses, churches, government, schools and other non residential buildings within
Lino Lakes. Bars near our borders (Blue Heron in Hugo and Kelly's in Centerville) could be included since
they generate large volumes of cans.
Methods: A plan needs to be established that will:
• Educate employees and inhabitants of non residential buildings of our recycling program
• A collection method that is not a burden on non residential properties. Strictly voluntary.
• A goal of profiting from the collection of cans. The can collection will count toward the cities
Anoka County collection goal and the cans could be brought to a recycler for funds to be used to
improve the environment in Lino Lakes through park development. Lino Lakes has several school
districts servicing the community. Parks would be one common goal and tied to the environment
by expanding the use of the great outdoors.
• Make the program fun, have goals and give recognition to participants. Pass out "We've gone
green and recycle to benefit Lino Lakes" to be displayed at the establishments.
• Find the person in each organization with a passion for the environment. There is always
someone. Teach them to be organizers within that entity. They will get their "boss" to place
separate recycling cans within their facility. They can arrange for the collection (often the
cleaning crew can be trained to leave recycling in a specific area) and find someone who can
drop off the materials at collection sites. Recycling might save garbage hauling costs the business
already has by reducing the container size or frequency of pickups. The key recycler could email
estimates of weights each week/month.
• Collection sites convenient to commercially zoned areas. Lake & Main, 35E & Main, Spirit Hills
Center, Lake & Lilac Dr. and the fire halls.
