Recycling ideas that have worked:
• In my own business, we recycle. I have a separate recycling bin that all employees use and I
bring all the materials home each week. In a previous business, I had an employee who brought
the bags home (I had over 50 employees) and her husband took them to the recycler for cash
that was their "mad money ". It just takes one person to get this started.
• WBL North Campus has collection bin for cans in school parking lot for can drop off. Funds go to
school.
• Hugo Fire Hall has a collection bin as a fund raiser. It is also near the VFW hall and from the
contents of the bin; I'd guess that the VFW Hall brings their cans over regularly.
• Many schools across the U.S. have participated in the Aluminum Can Council's America Recycles
Day School Challenge to raise funds. During a 12 -week period each fall, schools join with
aluminum suppliers and beverage can manufacturers in a national recycling competition. In
2009, more than 133 schools participated and raised over $53,000 and recycled more than
48,094 pounds of used aluminum beverage cans.
• The ACC's National School Challenge is a friendly, intra- industry contest where beverage can
manufacturers Ball Corporation, Metal Container Corporation and Rexam and aluminum suppliers
Alcoa Inc., Arco Aluminum and Novelis Inc. partner with schools to see which facility/school team
can recycle the most aluminum cans per student.
We need an education program for commercial properties, a convenient collection site program,
communication tools to measure progress, and goals for everyone to work towards. We can do this and
lead the way for other communities to help protect our environment.
Dave Roeser
•
•
