•
•
September 4, 2012
Sue Johnson
Anoka County Partnership for Better Health
Statewide Health Improvement Program
Dear Ms. Johnson,
The City of Lino Lakes Environmental Board has established as one of its 2012 goals to expand
the community gardens placed in Lino Lakes in 2011. The Gardens were funded by SHIP in
2010. With the previous grant money we were able to install 68 garden plots, provide a water
source for the plots and hoses /nozzles for participants. The property is located just south of the
Legion Hall at 7731 lake Drive.
The City rented out all 68 plots this year and would like to expand the plots on the site to another
68 gardens. We would like to irrigate and provide hoses for these plots as well. In addition we
would like to purchase compost for all of the garden plots. The site is very sandy and droughty
and compost would help to produce better crops using less water. We have included quotes for
these requested materials and services
Additional Lino Lakes' gardens could serve many more people in need of good nutritional food.
Centennial Food Shelf continues to see an increase in demand. We could use Lino Lakes
Community Gardens as an opportunity to educate residents about good nutritional food, as well
as give residents that are struggling with food supply the opportunity to grow needed food. The
City is asking Anoka County SHIP for assistance with expanding the Community Garden site in
Lino Lakes.
