•
•
BIRCH STREET TRAIL
1/29/04
Description: South side of Birch St. - Sherman Lake Rd. to Centerville Rd.
North side of Birch St. - Sherman Lake Rd. to Centerville Rd.
The proposed alignment of the trail is primarily located along the R/W line of Birch
Street to stay in compliance with the county's requirement of maintaining a 22' clear
zone from a paved rural roadway. This alignment would require the removal of some
trees from the R/W that are also in front of some residential houses. Specifically the first
four homes east of Sherman Lake Road on the north side.
Curb and gutter is proposed through an area about 500' long because there is a
wetland on both sides of the road. By placing curb & gutter we can reduce the clear zone
from 22' to 10' thereby reducing the impact on the wetlands. Installing curb and gutter
would then also require storm sewer and culverts. While doing this will reduce the impact
on the wetland there still may be some encroachment on the back slope of the trail. How
much of an impact will not be known until the final design is done. Some wetland
mitigation may need to be done.
On the south side just before you get to Centerville road the grade of the proposed
alignment rises substantially so a cost for a modular block retaining wall was also
included to keep our disturbed area to a minimum. This type of wall could also be used in
other areas along the trial route as needed.
The estimated project cost including engineering, legal, and administrative fees is,
$220,000.
All design must be reviewed and approved by Anoka County and Rice Creek
Watershed.
