Listed below is a summary of work that will be performed over the next
several weeks:
o Water service will be brought into the park for irrigation. This will require the
removal and replacement of a portion of trail near the eastern entrance of the
park near Fox Road. The trails near the work site will be barricaded off during
the duration of this project.
o The open play area (grass) around the ball field area will be completely
renovated to provide a safer environment for park users. This includes stripping
off and hauling away the existing vegetation, rough and final grading the site,
installing an irrigation system, and seeding.
o The infield area of the ball field will be replaced with ag -lime. A new backstop will
also be installed. To reinforce the fact that the design and intent of this ball field
is for informal use only, the player benches will be not be replaced. Also, a
pitcher's mound and base pegs will not be installed. Staff will also be
communicating with the various youth sports associations to further strengthen
our commitment that Birchwood Acres Park will not be used for any formal
games or scrimmages. Rather, area residents and youth teams will use the field
for informal activities and practices.
There have been some inquiries related to water fountains. We do not place water
fountains in our neighborhood parks due to the high cost of the fountains and constant
maintenance needed to keep them operational.
The stripping off and hauling away the existing vegetation are scheduled to begin as
early as next week. The removal of the trail may begin toward the end of next week.
The water service work is scheduled to begin the week of May 2nd. Our intent is to have
the entire project completed by the end of May. City staff is confident that these
improvements will make Birchwood Acres Park much more useable and enjoyable for
area residents.
Sincerely,
7CA
• Rick DeGardne
Public Services Director
J: \Ricks Folder \Parks Division \Neighborhood Parks \Birchwood Acres \Renovation update to residents 4- 22- 05.doc
