Travel to the outback of Australia, the savannah of Africa, <br />the tundra of the Eskimos or wherever else your mind can take you. <br />Week 7: Jungle Safari <br />• Craft: Jungle Mask <br />Take a safari this week and travel though the jungles and rainforests of the world Learn about <br />the creatures and plants of these exciting places or make up some of your own. "Monkey" <br />around this week like Tarzan and Cheetah. Go ape when you play your games. Spiff them up <br />to incorporate the jungle theme. Make some binoculars to carry on your safari so you don't <br />miss a single thing! <br />Week 8: Choose your Own Theme <br />• Craft: Bird Biscuit <br />Choose your own theme this week. Some of the themes chosen included: pirate, beach and <br />Hawaiian. <br />SPECIALISTS <br />A variety of specialists visited the Summer Playground Program sites this <br />summer. All except the Art/Event Specialist visited each site once — the <br />Art/Event Specialist visited each site weekly. This summer's specialists <br />included: Lino Lakes Police, Centennial Fire, North Ambulance, Wargo <br />Nature Center, Underwater Adventures and the Art/Event Specialist. <br />• INDIVIDUAL PARK PARTIES <br />Each playground site had two individual park parties this summer. The first party was the <br />Independence Day Party /Patriotic Party that was held during the third week of the program just <br />before the July 4th holiday. Each playground site was responsible for planning their own party <br />with help from the Art/Event Specialist. Some of the activities at the parties included: face <br />painting, bike parades, pinatas and special treats. <br />• <br />The second party for the summer was the Finale Party. As with the Patriotic Party, each <br />playground site was responsible for planning their own party with help from the Art/Event <br />Specialist. For this party the Art/Event Specialist created invitations for each park's party and <br />mailed them to all participants enrolled. This helped "pump up" the party and really got the <br />participants excited. Each Finale Party was themed, with the themes being chosen by the <br />playground staff. The Finale Party themes were: luau, pirate, carnival, Hawaiian and <br />beach /carnival combo. Staff were also allowed to choose a special treat for their Finale Party. <br />Treats included everything from pirate punch and cupcakes to pizza. <br />STAFF <br />Twenty -eight total staff were hired to work with the Summer Playground <br />Program this year in the following positions: Summer Coordinator (1), <br />Art/Event Specialist (1), Head Leader (7), Leader (11) and Assistant <br />Leader (8). Of the 28 hired, 16 were first year staff and 12 were returning <br />staff. Staff ranged in age from recently completed sophomore year in <br />high school to completed college. Our specific breakdown was as <br />follows: completed 10th grade in 2005 (4), completed 11th grade in <br />2005 (4), completed 12th grade in 2005 (2), completed 1St year of college in 2005 (8), completed <br />2nd year of college in 2005 (3), completed 3rd year of college in 2005 (2), completed 4th year of <br />college in 2005 (1), college graduates (4). <br />
