• THEMES & SPECIAL THEME CRAFT PROJECT <br />The objective of the theme week is to provide participants with <br />opportunities to learn and experience new activities in a fun and <br />safe environment. Each week of the Summer Playground <br />Program had a different theme. Staff would plan all activities, <br />including arts -n- crafts and games, around the weekly theme. In <br />addition, all sites were visited each week by the Art/Event <br />Specialist who led the participants in a special themed craft. The <br />themes and special themed crafts for this summer were: <br />Week 1: Search for the Jurassic <br />• Craft: Pasta Fossils <br />Explore the fantastic world of pre- historic beasts and the most amazing of all creatures – the <br />dinosaurs. Excavate your playground looking for dinosaur bones and fossils, learn about the <br />mighty tyrannosaurus rex and saber tooth tiger, or see who can come up with the most <br />frightening dinosaur roar! Make your activities revolve around the early days of the Earth and <br />have some truly awesome adventures! <br />Week 2: Under the Sea <br />• Craft: Underwater Scene <br />You'll be diving into incredible underwater adventures this week! With just a little imagination <br />you can turn your playground into the lost city of Atlantis, find sunken treasure and explore the <br />world of marine life. Play Sharks and Minnows, create sea anemones out of pipe cleaners and <br />blow bubbles! Teach your park the song Sebastian sings in Disney's "The Little Mermaid ". <br />Remember it's better, down where it's wetter, under the sea! <br />Week 3: Dynamic Detectives <br />• Craft: Scrapbooks <br />A mystery needs solving! Calling all super sleuths, private eyes and gumshoes! We need <br />some dynamic detectives on this case! No stone will be left unturned when this week is <br />through. Use your brain, magnifying glass, and imagination to crack the case. Some fun crafts <br />to try this week: fingerprint pictures, mug shots and magnifying glasses. Find a new clue each <br />day to help solve the playground mystery! How do you know? "Elementary, my dear Watson!" <br />Week 4: Sensational Science <br />• Craft: Grass Hair Planters <br />Experiment with fun this week! Talk about nature, chemical reactions and optical illusions. Use <br />your brains to the extreme and have some fun! Create a volcano out of papier -mache and <br />watch lava ooze out! Read Dr. Seuss' "The Lorax" and learn about conservation and recycling! <br />Make a rainbow float, and do some chemistry! Experiment, Experiment, and Experiment! <br />Week 5: Time Traveler <br />• Craft: Time Capsule <br />Celebrate history and the future this week! Travel back in time to the Renaissance, Ice Age, or <br />Ancient Egypt! Head into the future — what will the kids become when they grow up? Or blast <br />forward to the year 3000! Create a time capsule for each child to open next summer or one for <br />the park to open next summer! Use your imagination and have a fantastic journey though time. <br />Remember to send yourself a postcard! <br />Week 6: Around the World <br />• Craft: Map Frames <br />This week hop around the world to learn about other countries, crafts, traditions and games. <br />Have children trace their heritages to see what countries their ancestors come from, or learn <br />
