•
Lino Lakes Parks and Recreation Department
600 Town Center Parkway
Lino Lakes, MN 55014
(651) 982 -2440 Fax (651) 982 -2439
May 3, 2001
TO: Park Board Members
FROM: Rick DeGardner, Public Services Director
SUBJECT: Review Possible Skate Park
City staff has spent the past few years attempting to provide a skate park facility for residents.
Below is a summary of events that have occurred since January, 1998.
• January, 1998 - The school district approaches representatives from Blaine, Circle Pines,
Lexington, and Lino Lakes to pursue an inline skating facility for this area.
• March, 1998 - Skate board park committee considers pursing a regional skate board park at
the National Sports Center in Blaine. Initial capital costs approximately $250,000, estimated
annual operating costs $70,000, estimated revenue potential, $82,000.
• May, 1998 - Skate board park committee determines next step should be for each city to
review the possibility of establishing local skate board parks. Perhaps, in the future, the
committee can revisit a possible regional skateboard park.
• January, 1999 - City of Lino Lakes designates $10,000 for portable skate board ramps.
Centennial Middle School contacted about possibility of using portion of parking lot in
summer months for skateboard park.
• March, 1999 - School district contacts City of Lino Lakes indicating that they are not
interested in providing space for portable skate board ramps.
• May, 1999 - Park Board discusses different park locations for proposed skate board park. It
was determined that there is not an existing area that is conducive to a skateboard park. It
was the consensus of the Park Board to put the skate board park on hold.
• February, 2001 - The $10,000 for wheels project was released from the Park Dedication
Fund.
• • April, 2001 - City staff again approaches the school district requesting that a portion of the
Centennial Middle School parking lot be available for a portable skate board system during
the summer.
