Roland Sigurdson
Lino Lakes Parks and
Recreation Department
Pro romn Hiehli2hts
January Park Board Update
•
SPECIAL EVENTS
Snow Day: Our 4th Annual Snow Day was held on Saturday, January 25 at Wargo
Nature Center. Approximately 60 people participated in this year's event - significantly
less than previous years. We believe the lack of snow and the extremely cold temperatures
of late greatly influenced our numbers this year. Nonetheless, our activities were in full
swing. The only activity we could not offer was cross - country skiing. All other activities
were held as originally planned. Presenters at this year's event in included Roland
Sigurdson of the DNR's MinnAqua program and a dog sledder and his team.
Sweetheart Dance: Our second annual CLUB Sweetheart Dance will be held on Saturday, February 15 at Centennial
Elementary School. Families will be able to dance to music, enjoy festive refreshments and make a craft. Ninety participants have
registered so far for this event - our maximum is 200 participants.
YOUTH
Youth Instructional: Registration is underway for our winter instructional programs. Some programs (Dance, Martial Arts and
Fastpitch Pitching) began shortly after the first of the year. The remainder (Floor Hockey, Soccer, Pre - Kids- er -cise and Toss, Kick
and Catch) will begin the last week of the month. Registration numbers are remaining consistent with past years. We anticipate
promoting the Martial Arts program more to ensure continued growth.
Op!B: Forty-two youth attended our Grand Slam & Cheapskate field trip on December 26. Our December 27 trip to The MN
_
Museum & The Grove was cancelled due to low numbers. Twenty -five youth attended our MN Zoo and IMAX trip on
December 30. Twenty -seven youth attended our Snow Tubing trip on Martin Luther King Day (January 20) and 43 youth partici-
pated in our Winter Jam the Gym day on January 24. Our trips are slowly increasing in popularity as the need for alternative day-
care on non - school days increases.
ADULT
Basketball: 5- Player Basketball is in mid - season. Twelve teams are participating in this program. This is the maximum number
allowed and quite good considering the program's move from the White building gym to the smaller Red building gym.
Fitness: The fitness class enrollment is solid with Cardio Kick Boxing and Yoga seeing significant increase in enrollment.
MISCELLANEOUS
Outdoor Skating Rinks: The warming house shelters and outdoor skating rinks are operating effectively this winter. There was
a week where temperatures were unseasonably warm, but since then the ice conditions and
attendance have recovered. After the season, we will discuss and research the idea of
reopening the City Hall Park shelter and closing the Lino Park shelter.
Open Gym Programs: Open gym programs such as Open Basketball, Open Volleyball
and Family Open Gym are operating smoothly and have been experiencing a steady flow
of participation. Peak attendance for these programs was the first two weeks in January.
Activities Guide: We are currently working on our Spring Activities Guide - which is
scheduled to be out in homes the last week of February. In the future, the Parks and
ifteation section will be produced in- house. This will allow more control over the
uction look and cost.
Questions?
