March 21, 2000
• "Consider having one structure, which is safe for all ages. It will be difficult to keep younger children
ages 3 -5 off the main structure"
The industry standard is to have separate structures. This prevents a 2 year old from colliding with a 12
year old. Also, there are design standards for each structure. For example, guidelines for the 2 -5 year old
structure is to have steps in 6" increments and not have anything more than 48" above the ground. If these
guidelines were used for the 6 — 10 year old structure, the play experience would be nominal.
Mrs. Nelson's recommendations
A number of Mrs. Nelson's recommendations regarding particular components. Vendors were given
$27,000 to design playground structures that would provide a variety of play experiences. Adding a space
shuttle, double slides, or a merry-go -round would result in other components being eliminated. Options
can be discussed at the March 22 meeting.
"In order to reach out to the teenagers/adults in the neighborhood, please consider the 1/2 court
basketball court at this time."
In January of each year the Park Board recommends to the city council the expenditure of Park Dedication
funds for park improvements. This year's projects are playground equipment at Brandywood Park
($35,000), trail renovation ($20,000), complete development of Behm's Park ($10,000), and pave trails in
Behm's development ($35,000). Residents are encouraged to submit requests to the Park Board for
consideration.
"Consider picnic tables instead of benches."
We can provide both!
I apologize that this letter is so long. However, I felt it was necessary for you to understand my position. I
certainly didn't anticipate such a negative reaction for providing playground equipment for the residents of
Brandywood Estates. Hopefully, this gives you a better understanding of the situation that I am currently
facing at Brandywood Park.
Thank you for your time.
•
3/21/00
RD /Corr/Brandywood complaint response
