Program Highlights - February Park Board Update
YOUTH
"Vance: Winter session will be ending March 14. Due to the number of classes in each session, spring
session classes will begin March 27.
Pre - Kids- Er -Cise: This once a year class, taught and created by Thia Casanova, ended February 18. Due
to low registration numbers, the 1 -2 year old class was combined with the 3 -4 year old class. No negative
comments were received about this combination.
Floor- Hockey Mini Camp: The winter session ended February 15. Spring classes will begin April 4.
Toss, Kick, and Catch: The winter session ended February 19. Spring classes will begin April 1.
Snack and Skate: These outdoor- lessons are proving to be very popular. The mild weather has helped in
the area of not having to cancel any classes. This program will conclude with a skating party for
participants and their parents at the Centennial Sports Arena.
Hockey Skills Development: Volunteer coaches instruct young children in the hockey skills area. This
program is held at Sunrise Park. It is very enjoyable to see five and six year olds skating around and
attempting to play hockey. In comparision, this program is not as large as other programs, but the young
participants have a positive hockey experience.
Baskets "Have a Ball ": We redeveloped this program from last year and what an improvement. It was
anticipated that 30 or so children would register for- this program, but we have 30 kids registered in
each session. We are using a mix of paid and volunteer coaches and I believe this system is working out
well.
Softball Pitching Clinics: These classes have proven to be very popular. This winter we had to add an
additional session of this program. The instructor is outstanding and the participants are responding to her
teaching techniques. The spring classes are already close to full.
Family Open Gym: Each week this drop -in program is growing in popularity. For a small fee of $1 per
person, participants can enjoy several gym games. At times, the gym has become overcrowded. A larger
location will be sought for next year.
YOUTH TRIPS AND ACTIVITIES
Ski Trips: Our final ski trip of the season took place at Trollhaugen on February 22. 32 youth attended
this trip.
CLUB: Our cooperative "spring break" trips with the Blaine Parks and Recreation
Department and the Centennial Community Services Department went very well.
"Rollerskating and Chucky Cheese" (Feb. 21) - 50 participants, "Ice- skating and a Movie"
(Feb. 7 ) - 20 participants, "Minnesota Zoo" (Feb. 24) - 13 participants, "Jam the Gym"
(Feb. 25) - 20+ participants. Planned March trips, scheduled for March 16 and 17, include
Hayride, Lunch and Fantasia 2000" and "Jam the Gym." We have been very pleased by
the successes of these trips and our cooperative venture. We are planning to continue this
relationship for our summer field trips.
