The funds will be used
to purchase the trees, plastic protectors, and starter fertilizer. It is hoped that this project will encourage
the citizens of Smith Center to realize the value of a shade tree and thus will plant more on their own.
KENTUCKY
Fayette County 4 -H Council Contact: David Swenk, CF
Grant Award: $1,000 Phone: (606)258 -3286
The project proposed is an extension of the annual "Reforestation the Bluegrass" event, where, by using
donated funds and citizen involvement, systematic reforestation of Fayette County has been initiated.
Sponsored and coordinated by local 4 -H volunteers and supervised by Lexington's Urban Forester, this
project will involve community volunteers planting approximately 1,000 bare root seedlings of various
species native to the area. The seedlings will be planted along a stream this fall in a city of Lexington
park in order to establish a buffer enhancing water quality and providing wildlife habitat. Management of
the competing vegetation will be accomplished by placing Vispore® tree mats around the trees inhibiting
encroaching weeds. The planting design was determined by Lexington's Urban Forester and ongoing
management of the area will be done by Lexington's parks staff. The goals of the tree planting will be to
enhance environmental stability, promote community involvement, and serve as an educational tool
teaching reforestation methodology and benefits for urban areas.
Jessamine County 4 -H Council Contact: Donald Grimes
Grant Award: $1,000 Phone: (606)858 -4857
The Tree Planting Partnership Program between the Jessamine County 4 -H Youth and the staff of the
City of Wilmore will be an excellent opportunity for both to work and learn side by side. Participating in
worthwhile community projects is an important lesson for teens who will have the opportunity to study the
need to preserve the natural environment in order to provide green spaces and wildlife cover in a city.
Our project requires the study of plant materials and their relationship to solving problems related to
traffic, heat and wind, and the lack of color, shape, and beauty in this railroad setting. Planting trees,
blooming plants and shrubs will provide habitat for birds and other wildlife and preserve green space for
the community.
MINNESOTA
Imagination 4 -H Contact: Dana A. Raines
Grant Award: $500 Phone: (218)327 -2849
The Imagination 4 -H Club of Nashwauk, Minnesota will be working with the city in the landscaping of a
community park. In recent years trees have been lost due to wind storms and neglect. The park is used
by the community for a variety of activities that include picnicking and camping. 4 -H Club members will
learn about various plant materials, landscape design, and the value of plants for wildlife. The landscape
will emphasize native trees and shrubs that are valuable to wildlife. A maintenance plan for the plantings
will be developed as part of the project and will serve as an ongoing community service and learning
opportunity for the club.
MARYLAND
The New Windsor Tree Committee Contact: Linda F. Donaldson
Grant Award: $1,000 Phone: (410)875 -0991
The New Windsor Tree Committee, together with the 4 -H Youth Coordinator and volunteers will plant
approximately 25 shade trees in and around the Town of New Windsor, for the purpose of increasing
shade in the town and enhancing the environment. We will purchase the trees from Wakefield Valley
Nursery and they will hold them until we are ready, and deliver them to prepared sites where our
volunteer (4 -H, local school children, NWTC members) will plant, water, and mulch them. - Linda
Donaldson
MONTANA
Broadus Tree Board Contact: Ramon Tresch
Grant Award: $1,000 Phone: (406)436 -2133
The Broadus Tree Board in cooperation with two local 4 -H clubs identified a need for additional trees an(
shrubs in our south - eastern Montana community. We have all come together to complete a project that
will be long lasting and beneficial economically to the community and educationally to our participants.
One area of neglect has been the retirement and nursing home. A partial shelterbelt was begun two
years ago and never finished or cared for. It has been an eye -sore for years. We will be replacing dead
