In addition, we will install a drip system to greatly enhance the
survivability of the new, as well as old, trees and shrubs. This will improve the aesthetic quality of our
community as it lowers heating and cooling costs to the Power River Manor, not to mention the savings
in snow removal from the entrance to the Manor.
NORTH DAKOTA
Nelson County 4 -H Council Contact: Kristi Berdal
Grant Award: $200 Phone: (701)247 -2521
A "Natural Resources Day Camp" will be held on an afternoon in September or October 1999. Area
youth, along with adult volunteers of the Nelson County Historical Society, will meet for an afternoon at
the Stump Lake Park Pioneer Village near Pekin, North Dakota. Educational sessions will be conducted
by NDSU State and County Extension staff members, with sessions focusing on forestry- related subject
(types of trees, healthy environments for trees, proper tree planting, and care of trees). Participants will
then prepare the soil and ground and plant the trees. Youth participants will also be urged to take part in
the long -term care of the trees planted in the Pioneer Village. The youth coordinator of the project has
expressed, "The Day Camp will be a fun day and we will also plant trees that will be at the park for many
years."
OHIO
Belpre Middle School Contact: Greg Ring, Principal
Grant Award: $1,000 Phone: (740) 423 -3010
In conjunction with the Washington county Extension 4 -H program, the Belpre Tree Commission,
Northlake Nursery, and several area businesses, Belpre Middle School in Blepre, Ohio has committed tc
planting 200 trees on its ground by 2003, the Bicentennial birthday of the state of Ohio. The sixth grade
class has organized as a 4 -H club under the direction of science teacher Pat Rouse. They have
assumed the leadership role in raising funds, planning and implementing this project. With the aid of a
local landscaper, the project has blossomed to include many unique plans, such as hummingbird
feeders, a small pond area, a butterfly and box turtle garden, a handicap accessible path through the
area, wind chimes, benches, and stepping stones featuring handprints of the students.
OKLAHOMA
Ripley Schools 4 -H Activities Contact: Natalie Cox
Grant Award: $1,000 Phone: (918)372 -4242
4 -H members and students at Ripley Public School will develop a plan and begin the establishment of a
memorial grove to remember the 44 people who were killed by the tornadoes that crossed Oklahoma on
May 3. The trees will be planted along the edge of the school property where they can add beauty to the
grounds while serving as a wind break to the area. Plans will be developed so the trees can be planted
in the fall of 1999 and the spring of 2000, as trees are available. Students will work with an advisory
committee of school personnel and volunteers from the community to make sure varieties that are
selected will grow well in the area. As much as possible, 4 -H members and students will be involved in
planting the trees and caring for them. When tornadoes set new wind speed records on May 3, they
damaged and destroyed many homes, businesses, and trees. "The trees that were not completely
destroyed are attempting to grow again, just like the people who lost many of their possessions in the
storm. This memorial grove will be a way for us to make future homes for birds and wildlife while
remembering those who died that night," says Hope Cox, co- author of the grant proposal. A small sign
will be erected on the site recognizing Deft, Inc. and 4 -H as the sponsor.
OREGON
Harney County 4 -H Knitting Kool Kats Club Contact: Shana C. Withee
Grant Award: $1,000 Phone: (541) 573 -2506
Cooperation is the plan for the Knitting Kool Kats 4 -H Club and Harney Wildlife Parkway Committee.
Work has already begun to turn an abandoned 1.6 mile railroad right -of -way into a trail for watchable
wildlife through Burns and Hines. Knitting Kool Kats members and their families will plant and care for
trees at the six resting areas along the trail. Trees will provide shade for people resting on the benches
and perches for birds near the trail. Shrubs for wildlife and ground birds cover and food are being
provided by the Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife. Tree planting, tree protections, watering and
caring for the trees for the first year will be the responsibility of the Knitting Kool Kats 4 -Hers, their
families and their 4 -H Leader.
