The Jefferson County WV 4 -H Leader's Association, in
cooperation with the County Farm Bureau and the County Historic Landmarks Commission, saw a need
for trees on the site location of this 1790's farmstead to provide shade, authenticity, and soil
conservation. Most of the trees will be poplars and pine, but 10 antique fruit trees will also be planted.
Lars, youth coordinator and a member of the Middleway Climbers 4 -H Club said, "I'm excited about the
changing character of the farm as the trees grow and mature over the years."
WEST VIRGINIA
Leon Luckies Walking Track Contact: Ruth Dunham
Grant Award: $1,000 Phone: (304)458 -1637
The "County Trail" Walking Track we recently completed at Healthcare of Leon/Buffalo is not a very
picturesque scene. The planting of trees and shrubs will enhance the overall appearance of the track,
plus help stabilize the soil. We plan to label the trees with their scientific names. This will further our
children's education on recognizing and identifying some of our West Virginia trees. Benches will be
placed strategically around the track to provide relaxation for the walkers, or anyone who visits, and alloy
them to enjoy natures beauty. The construction of this walking track has increased the needs and
knowledge of individuals to exercise. We are extremely pleased with the number of individuals who use
the track. Leon Luckies 4 -H Club's success will be measured by the enjoyment and pleasure the
landscaping provides the track, the area, and the community. As Nancy Baker, Walking Track
Coordinator says, "There is no measurable guideline for the success of the track, only smiles of
appreciation, words of gratitude, usage of the track and the knowledge that we, members of the Leon
Luckies 4 -H Club, are contributing to the health and welfare of the community."
[ Programs I Are you into it?
