The
initiative for this project was due to the deforestation caused by Hurricane George on the Ceiba Beaches
and the need to protect endemic species that use this beach as their natural habitat. The local office of
Puerto Rico Agricultural Extension Service in Ceiba will work in cooperation with the Ceiba Committee
for the Development of the community Resources, the Ceiba Municipal Government and the local Civil
Defense for the implementation of this project. One thousand leaflets will be distributed in four
committees to educate them on the project. Achievements will be published through local radio station
spots and newspapers. Bumper stickers with the phrase "I planted and adopted a tree in Los Machos
Beach in Ceiba" with a certificate of adoption will be issued to the participants. The youth coordinator,
Samuel Astacio Cintron, says, "Through this reforestation project the youth of our community will
develop conscience on the need to protect the green acres of the Ceiba Municipality."
Lajas 4 -H Club Contact: Edwin F. Bayron
Grant Award: $1,000 Phone: (787)899 -1960
During the next few months, the Lajas 4 -H Club plans to stimulate the planting for the trees for
reforestation after Hurricane George. The project will be conducted to train twenty 4 -H members of the
rural area on selecting, planting, and taking care of these trees. This will provide better living for the
whole community and will also help to conserve the natural resources. In addition, the project will enable
more people to be active together and promote better understanding between youth and adults. For
example, lots of community organizations such as the Lajas Township, the Agricultural Extension
Service, the Commonwealth Natural Resources Department, and the Solic Waste Authority will all be
helping, along with ten volunteers. Each 4 -H member will promote a new member and help teach a new
member about the importance of reforestation. Each tree will be adopted for a person or family.
Franchesca Aponte, San German 4 -H Club Contact: Kenneth Garcia
Grant Award: $1,000 Phone: (787)892 -1385
The 4 -H Youth, the local 4 -H Council and Advisory Committee will develop an educational program
about the importance of tree planting and reforestation of rural areas that were affected by the pass of
Hurricane Georges on September 21, 1998. The tree planting project will be along the county of San
German, especially in the watershed of Guanajibo River to avoid soil erosion, sedimentation of rivers
and to protect the quantity and quality of water in the area. The reforestation of the area will increase the
rain and the habitat for wildlife and birds of the region. Different working committees of Community
leaders, farmers, and County Agencies will be organizing to implement the reforestation and tree
planting programs to guarantee its success.
Clubes 4 -H de Camuy Contact: Magali Cardec
Grant Award: $1,000 Phone: (787) 898 -2270
The Guajataca Lake serves water to the municipalities of Aguadilla, Isabela, Aguada, Rincon, Moca, anc
Quebradillas. The low level of water of this lake has created rationing in these communities. The water 01
this lake is used to generate electrical energy, for agricultural, industrial, and domestic uses. Areas
nearest the lake have been deforested and are considered one of the causes for the reduction of the
water level of the lake. The 4 -H Club members from Camuy shall learn the importance of the forestation
and take care of these areas and can continue a reforestation plan in their communities. This will have a
multiplicator effect in the community, so that youngsters, the Natural Resource Department, Electric
Energy Authority, and other persons can be involved in these activities.
SOUTH DAKOTA
Kattle Kings 4 -H Club Contact: Peggy Kalt
Grant Award: $350 Phone: (605)226 -0746
The Kattle Kings 4 -H Club will plant trees at the Community cemetery for screening and beautification
purposes. The trees will screen fuel storage tanks that are right beside the cemetery. The project will
take place right outside the town of Warner, South Dakota. The Kattle Kings 4 -H Club is an active 4 -H
Club who enjoys doing community service work. With the financial help of the Community Tree Planting
