Project Size: 38,643 acres (based on ArcView GIS analysis, please see attachment #1)
11. Summary of Key Proposed Activities:
1) Conduct land cover classification of over 38,600 acres of public and private lands between
and including the Rice Creek Chain of Lakes Regional Park System, Carlos Avery Wildlife
Management Area, and up to the City of Blaine corporate limits.
2) Educate watershed and natural resource managers on conducting and applying the newly
created Minnesota Land Cover Classification System. Educate, inform, and collaborate with
local landowners and municipalities.
3) Develop an ArcView GIS land cover layer for the purposes of greenway and open space
planning, landscape -scale watershed analysis, wetlands assessment, land cover and land use
analysis, land acquisition prioritization, landscape scale analysis of natural area connectivity,
and prioritization of future restoration and management areas between and among two
regionally- significant open space corrid9rs.
4) Inventory and gain additional information on the extend of natural and semi - natural land
cover types to assist with and compliment ongoing `second -wave' biological surveys and
associated analysis of biotic and abiotic landscape characteristics within the project area,
5) Form collaborative relationships among municipalities and governing agencies, and
strengthen existing collaborative inter- agency efforts in the region, with the long -term goal of
completing a comprehensive land cover classification for all of Anoka County and use these
data to develop a unified regional greenway plan and vision,
6) Disseminate the results of the land cover classification to collaborating agencies, local
municipalities, and other stakeholders.
Rice Creek Corridor Expansion Greenway Planning Grant Page 2 of 11
Anoka Conservation District and Collaborating Agencies January 28, 2000
