January 27, 2000
Minnesota Department of Natural Resources
Division of Forestry
1200 Warner Road
Saint Paul, MN 55106
(612) 772 -7925 / (612) 772 -7599
Sharon Pfeifer
Minnesota Department of Natural Resources
1200 Warner Road
St. Paul, MN 55106
Dear Ms. Pfeifer,
This is a letter of support for the Anoka Soil and Water Conservation District's Rice Creek
Corridor Expansion proposal for a Metro Greenways planning grant. Metro Greenways funding
for Anoka SWCD will make possible a cooperative natural resource assessment between the
Rice Creek Corridor Expansion project and our Forest Service - supported project called
"Integrating Natural Resource Guidance to Enhance Smart Growth in Wildland -Urban Interface
Communities" (short name - Wildland Urban Interface Project).
Specifically, as part of the SWCD's grant proposal, we will contribute up to $6,000 (in federal
dollars) for land cover mapping in Lino Lakes. In addition, significant DNR and Minnesota Land
Trust staff time in the Wildland Urban Interface project will contribute towards the Rice Creek
Corridor expansion project's natural resource assessment and accomplishments in Lino Lakes.
A major goal of our Wildland Urban Interface project is to work intensively with one or more
local units of government (along with the Minnesota Land Trust) on specific measures for
incorporating integrated natural resource conservation and management (including greenways) in
their city plans, policies, and particularly their subdivision ordinances and plans. Completing
natural resource assessment and mapping using the Minnesota Land Cover Classification System
is critical to this project. We only have $12;00 in federal dollars for mapping. By working
cooperatively with the SWCD, Rice Creek Watershed, the local units, Metro Greenways, etc. we
will be able to complete mapping for two large urban fringe cities rather than one. Thus, Metro
Greenways investment in the Rice Creek Corridor Expansion project will greatly improve the
scope and effectiveness of our project as well as allow us to contribute to their project.
Thank you for your support for the Rice Creek Corridor Expansion Project.
Sincerely,
Margaret (Peggy) Sand
Metro Region Forestry Manager
cc: Hannah Dunevitz
Jason Husveth
DNR Information: 651 -296 -6157 • 1- 888 -646 -6367 • TTY: 651- 296 -5484 • 1 -800- 657 -3929
A.
