Mr. John Powell, P.E.
January 20, 1999
Page 2
We did a preliminary investigation as part of the report and indicated that traffic generated by the
Reshanau Lake Estates, Shenandoah, Park Grove and Birchwood Acres Additions could modify their
traffic pattern and utilize West Shadow Lake Drive and 62nd Street. We estimated that there was
potential to add an additional 50 trips during the a.m. peak hour and 70 trips during the p.m. peak
hour to an extended West Shadow Lake Drive and consequently to 62nd Street.
If West Shadow Lake Drive is extended further, from 62nd Street to County Road J, the traffic
volumes on 62nd Street diminish considerably, as the West Shadow Lake Drive traffic and a
considerable amount of generated traffic along 62nd Street would then use West Shadow Lake Drive
to County Road J.
It appears that part of the Mattke report refers to an additional 22 homes which would be fronting
on West Shadow Lake Drive. The potential traffic from this type of development was included in
our previous report, in terms of future general volumes. By fronting on West Shadow Lake Drive,
the traffic would have the opportunity to travel in several directions. We estimate that approximately
30 percent of the traffic would travel to the northwest, 25 percent to the northeast and 45 percent to
the southwest. With West Shadow Lake Drive extended south to County Road J, the volumes
traveling to the northeast would be reduced and replaced by traffic traveling to the southeast on the
new portion of West Shadow Lake Drive. This means that the 22 new homes would generate
between 210 and 220 trips per day. There would be approximately 16 of these during the morning
rush hour and 22 in the evening rush hour. These rush hour periods are one hour in length and should
not be confused with the 21 hour rush period used by Mattke in his report.
With the completion of West Shadow Lake Drive to 62nd Street, it is anticipated that some of the
traffic generated by the Colonial Woods subdivision will be reoriented. The Mattke report indicates
that traffic now traveling west to Ware Road and traveling back on County Road J to I -35E would
instead choose to use West Shadow Lake Drive, Birch Street and Centerville Road. In analyzing
traffic both coming from and going to Colonial Woods, we feel that some traffic may utilize that
route to the north, but at best about half the traffic would do so. With approximately 28 dwelling
units, the Colonial Woods development would generate about 270 vehicle trips per day. With
approximately 30 to 35 percent traveling to the southeast (80 vehicles), this would be a net daily
reduction of approximately 40 trips on 62nd Street if one -half were diverted to West Shadow Lake
Road.
Offsetting this would be the higher volume of traffic generated in the Birchwood Acres Additions
and Reshanau Lake Estates Addition. Much of this traffic which now travels on Deerwood Lane or
West Shadow Lake Drive to the north would instead be able to use West Shadow Lake Drive and
62nd Street. We estimate that this would add approximately 500 vehicle trips per day to 62nd Street.
This would remove some traffic from Hawthorne Road and reduce volumes on West Shadow Lake
Drive and Deerwood Lane south of Birch Street. Thus, the extension of West Shadow Lake Drive
could add 500 trips to 62nd Street but be offset by those 40 trips from Colonial Woods as well as
redistribution of trips from Miller's South Glen and other development. We do not believe that
traffic volumes will decrease on 62nd Street as a result of the extension of West Shadow Lake Drive.
