7. When safety flanges are required, they shall be used only with wheels designed to fit the <br />flanges. Only safety flanges of a type and design and properly assembled so as to ensure that <br />the pieces of the wheel will be retained in case of accidental breakage, shall be used. <br />8. Only ring tested abrasive wheels shall be purchased and then closely inspected before <br />mounting to ensure that they are free from cracks or defects. <br />9. Grinding wheels shall fit freely on the spindle and shall not be forced on. The spindle nut <br />shall be tightened only enough to hold the wheel in place. <br />10. Employees using abrasive wheel shall be protected by eye and ear protection equipment in <br />accordance with the requirements of ASHA standards, which states that adequate eye and ear <br />protection shall be worn except when adequate eye protection is afforded by eye shields <br />which are permanently attached to the bench or floor stand. <br />11 Abrasive wheels and tools used by employees shall meet other applicable requirements of <br />American National Standards Institute, B7. 1 -1970. Safety Code for the Use, Care and <br />Protection of Abrasive Wheels. <br />Portable Air Compressors <br />1. Before operating portable air compressor equipment, all personnel shall read the operations <br />and maintenance manuals. <br />2. Appropriate clothing, eye, ear and foot protection must be worn. <br />3. During job site operations in the street, the Minnesota Department of Transportation, <br />Uniform Traffic Control Manual, Appendix B, shall be followed. <br />4. Lockout procedures shall be followed as presented in OSHA Standard 1910.147. <br />Crack Filling Equipment <br />1. Before operating crack filling equipment, all personnel shall read the operations and <br />maintenance manuals. <br />2. Appropriate clothing, eye, ear and foot protection must be worn. <br />3. During job site operations in the street, the Minnesota Department of Transportation, <br />Uniform Traffic Control Manual, Appendix B, shall be followed. <br />4. Lock out procedures shall be followed as presented in OSHA standard 1910.147. <br />Mowers, (tractors, self propelled and push type) <br />1. Loose fitting clothing shall not be worn while operating or working around such equipment. <br />Shirts and full length slacks shall be worn while operating or working around equipment. <br />2. Before the operation of such equipment, all operations and maintenance manuals must be <br />reviewed. <br />3. Before operating such equipment and while spark plug wire is disconnected on keyless <br />mowers, the operator shall inspect the mower blades, gears, pulleys, etc., to determine their <br />condition. <br />4. Before operating such equipment, the employee shall also check to determine that the <br />machine has the proper chain guards, belt guards, and power take -off shields, and that the gas <br />tank is full and not leaking, and that wheels, handles and bolts are tight. Also mower deck <br />should be checked for cracks and loose mounting flanges. Mower deck deflection chutes <br />shall be in place. <br />9 <br />
