Hard hats shall be kept in good repair and proper adjustment and shall be worn only by the individual to whom they are assigned. They shall be used in any operation where there are hazards of moving loads or being bumped in confined spaces. This includes, but is not limited to the following: a. While in excavations, manholes, trenches and low headroom areas. b. While using tree spade and tree trimmings. c. When changing lights with High Rangers and snorkel. d. In any other area where hazards may exist. 5. Hearing Protection Whenever there are activities involving machines or equipment that produce sound levels that exceed current OSHA guidelines, proper ear protection shall be used. a. While operating equipment that exceed maximum decibel levels. b. In any other area where hazards may exist. 6. Protective Clothing a. Reflectorized safety vest shall be worn by all employees working on or near public roadways and by flag people directing traffic. In the event of an emergency, vests will be put on as soon as reasonably possible. b. Protective gloves and clothing shall be worn while handling caustic or dangerous chemicals, while welding, handling batteries and while changing mercury vapor lights. c. Employees shall not wear loose, flowing or ragged clothing on or near moving machinery or equipment. d. Employees shall wear shirts and full- length pants for jobs involving construction or maintenance projects, i.e. street, sewer, water, ground maintenance, parks, etc. e. Employees shall wear footwear appropriate for the task being performed. The use of over the ankle steel toe work boots is encouraged. Personal Protective Equipment Checklist A. Long pants, appropriate footwear and a shirt or T -shirt is required year around for all city maintenance employees. B. The protective equipment listed below is mandatory (x) for each job listed. C. Each employee is responsible for being familiar with the checklist and wearing mandatory protective equipment. 28
