Hard hats shall be kept in good repair and proper adjustment and shall be worn only by the <br />individual to whom they are assigned. They shall be used in any operation where there are <br />hazards of moving loads or being bumped in confined spaces. This includes, but is not limited to <br />the following: <br />a. While in excavations, manholes, trenches and low headroom areas. <br />b. While using tree spade and tree trimmings. <br />c. When changing lights with High Rangers and snorkel. <br />d. In any other area where hazards may exist. <br />5. Hearing Protection <br />Whenever there are activities involving machines or equipment that produce sound levels that <br />exceed current OSHA guidelines, proper ear protection shall be used. <br />a. While operating equipment that exceed maximum decibel levels. <br />b. In any other area where hazards may exist. <br />6. Protective Clothing <br />a. Reflectorized safety vest shall be worn by all employees working on or near public <br />roadways and by flag people directing traffic. In the event of an emergency, vests will be <br />put on as soon as reasonably possible. <br />b. Protective gloves and clothing shall be worn while handling caustic or dangerous <br />chemicals, while welding, handling batteries and while changing mercury vapor lights. <br />c. Employees shall not wear loose, flowing or ragged clothing on or near moving machinery <br />or equipment. <br />d. Employees shall wear shirts and full- length pants for jobs involving construction or <br />maintenance projects, i.e. street, sewer, water, ground maintenance, parks, etc. <br />e. Employees shall wear footwear appropriate for the task being performed. The use of <br />over the ankle steel toe work boots is encouraged. <br />Personal Protective Equipment Checklist <br />A. Long pants, appropriate footwear and a shirt or T -shirt is required year around for all <br />city maintenance employees. <br />B. The protective equipment listed below is mandatory (x) for each job listed. <br />C. Each employee is responsible for being familiar with the checklist and wearing <br />mandatory protective equipment. <br />28 <br />
