Then go to a lighter
shade, which gives sufficient view of the weld zone without going below the minimum. In
oxyfuel gas welding or cutting where the torch produces a high yellow light, it is desirable to use
a filter lens that absorbs the yellow or sodium in the visible light of the (spectrum) operation.
* *These values apply where the actual arc is clearly seen. Experience has shown that lighter
filters may be used when the arc is hidden by the workpiece.
3. Respiratory Protection
On jobs involving exposure to harmful fumes, gases, mists, or respiratory protection shall by
used.
a. Supervisors shall thoroughly instruct employees whose work assignments involve the use
of respiratory protection about the potential hazards they are exposed to and how to use
the proper respiratory equipment.
b. Suitable breathing apparatus shall be conspicuously placed near work environments that
present atmospheric hazards.
c. Respirators shall be inspected periodically and after emergency use.
d. A program shall be maintained for cleaning and disinfecting respirators.
e. Use and maintenance of fresh air masks:
i. One other employee shall be notified to stand by in case of emergency before an
employee enters a potentially hazardous area.
ii. Employee shall be certain mask is functioning properly and that face seal is
secure.
iii. Masks shall not be worn when conditions prevent a good face seal, such as
sideburns or beard growth, etc.
iv. Employees shall not wear contact lenses with masks in contaminated
atmospheres.
4.
