Thomas Drow, 6317 Red Maple Lane, <br />noted that the Street Condition and Traffic Study prepared for the Millers South Glen project (2 <br />years ago) projected an increase of 50 -70 trips per day on 62nd Street from existing homes in <br />Birchwood Acres if WSLD were extended to 62nd Street. Add 3 trips per day from the homes in <br />the new project, and the total increase in traffic on 62nd Street would be about 130 trips per day. <br />A solution that we proposed is that the City use part of the S44,000 that RC would contribute to <br />the street reconstruction fund to widen the north side of 62nd street with a trail from Colonial <br />Woods subdivision to Millers South Glen (where it continues to Ware Road) This would provide <br />pedestrian safety along 62nd Street, and also a certain amount of additional safety to vehicles. <br />Other alternatives include temporary cul-de -sacs, either at the south end of WSLD, or at the north <br />end of the new section of WSLD. A cul-de-sac at the north end would limit the increase in traffic <br />on 62nd to about 70 additional trips per day, while a cul- de-sac on the south end would prevent <br />any increase at all.. <br />In summary, the major concern raised with regard to the WEST SHADOW PONDS project was a <br />safety issue regarding street safety. Part of the concern involves speeding, and part involves the <br />narrow width of 62nd Street. Even without this project, safety concerns exist regarding 62nd <br />Street. With the project, however, the City will have $44,000 of dedicated street reconstruction <br />funds that it could use to improve safety on 62nd Street. <br />If the City approves this project, the major decisions will involve safety issues: (1) whether to <br />install stop signs on WSLD, (2) whether to use part of the dedicated street reconstruction funds <br />to widen 62nd Street with a trail, and (3) whether to allow the connection of WSLD with 62nd <br />Street, or to construct a temporary cul- de-sac at one end of the new section of WSLD to reduce <br />traffic on 62nd Street. <br />We believe that the advantages of connecting West Shadow Lake Road and 62nd Street outweigh <br />the disadvantages. The advantages include reducing the present 3/4 mile Red Maple Lane <br />cul- de-sac to about 500 feet, allowing a more direct route from Birchwood Acres to Ware Road, <br />allowing a more direct route from Red Maple Lane to Birch Street, and reducing the school bus <br />and garbage truck traffic on 62nd Street by allowing one -way driving loops via WSLD. <br />Sincerely <br />Tedd W.
